The Urban Studies Department and Intergenerational Urban Institute at Worcester State College invite YOU to help end hunger in our community. This forum is free and open to the public and will be held in the Blue Lounge of the WSC Student Center. Invited panelists include Christa Drew, Director of the Hunger Free and Healthy Initiative in Worcester, Jean McMurray, Executive Director of the Worcester County Food Bank, Katherine Shocas, Director of Special Projects at UMass Memorial, and Ken Crater, Brigham Hill Community Farm. An "Empty Bowl" event will follow immediately in both the Blue Lounge and the Exhibit Area, with soup donated by Chartwells. Bowls of soup are available for purchase ($5.00 for students, $10.00 for others). A raffle will be also be held as part of the event with prizes including sports tickets, gift certificates to local restaurants, an iPOD and more. Raffle tickets are included in the price of the bowl, but will also be sold separately. The idea behind the "empty bowl" is to remember the many in our world and our community who do not have enough to eat. All proceeds will benefit the Worcester County Food Bank, Worcester Food Policy Council, Brigham Hill Community Farm and South Worcester Neighborhood Center. Please call the IUI at 508-929-8900 for more information.

Anti-War Demonstration and Concert on Boston Common

Oct 11 2008 - 11:00am
Common Parade Grounds PERFORMERS: PETE CASSINI (Peasant folk) KIER BYRNES (Americana) FLUTTR EFFECT (modern rock) RYAN HARVEY (activist folk) CASEY DESMOND (singer/songwriter) SGT MAXWELL’S PEACE CHORUS (anti-war folk/rock/gospel) BOJAH & THE INSURRECTION (political funk) MICHAEL BLOOM (political folk) SON OF NUN (hip hop) PAT SCANLON (Veterans for Peace) SPEAKERS: ASHLEY SMITH JOSEPH GERSON CHUCK TURNER MEGHAN DAY Former Staff Sergeant GABRIEL PAYAN March, 2008 ushered in the sixth year of war and occupation “without end” on Iraq. In an act of arrogance and impunity, Congress in a bipartisan vote approved another $162 billion in funding for the wars on Iraq and Afghanistan. The stepping up of threats against Iran and the increased likelihood of a U.S. troop “surge” into Afghanistan point to an imperative for action and an independent voice from the peace and justice movement. In light of these developments, grass roots forces from around the country gathered together at the end of June for the National Assembly to End the Iraq War and Occupation in Cleveland, Ohio. At the conference an action plan for the months ahead was discussed and approved in a democratic vote. As part of this plan, over 95% voted in favor of supporting pre-election protests being organized in cities and localities around the country on October 11, 2008. In Boston, the October 11 mobilizing committee has been formed to organize a mass demonstration on Boston Common around the following demands/slogans: • STAND UP FOR PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST. • STOP THE WARS AND OCCUPATIONS IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN. • BRING THE TROOPS HOME NOW. • MONEY FOR JOBS, EDUCATION, HEALTHCARE AND HOUSING …NOT FOR WAR AND OCCUPATION. • NO SANCTIONS OR ATTACK ON IRAN. • STOP THE RACIST SCAPEGOATING OF ARABS AND MUSLIMS. • STOP THE ASSAULT ON HUMAN RIGHTS AND CIVIL LIBERTIES. It was on October 11, 2002 that Congress approved the “Iraq War Resolution” granting the Bush administration authorization to invade Iraq. The weeks ahead will continue to be filled with debate as the election campaigns gear up. Instead of being spectators who watch the media pundits put their spin on the political pronouncements of the candidates, we will be actively engaged in injecting our agenda, the antiwar agenda, into the intensifying debate. You and your organization can help: 1. Endorse the Action! Get your organization and allies to endorse the October 11 action; simply reply to info@oct11boston.org if you can endorse or if you have any questions or comments. 2. Plan the Action! Participate in the next planning and organizing meeting that will take place October 6th , 3:00 PM. Location to be announced. Please check www.oct11boston.org for updates. 3. Support the Movement! Help by providing human resources (including volunteer time), funds, logistical support, and artistic ideas for building the action. 4. Network with Results! Help reach out to other organizations, groups and individuals to support the action and add more voices to this movement. 5. Educate the Public! Hold teach-ins, film screenings and other events in the run up to the action. 6. Build Grassroots Outreach! Leaflet, flyer, and poster in your neighborhood, campus, workplace, etc. And, of course... MOBILIZE EVERYONE YOU KNOW to SHOW the WORLD that the ANTIWAR MOVEMENT has the POWER to BUILD, SPREAD and turn millions more against this war and ultimately STOP THE WARS of the future. For more information, please visit www.oct11boston.org or reply to info@oct11boston.org with your phone number and a good time to call, and we will be in touch soon. Sincerely, The October 11 Mobilizing Committee Oct11Boston.org - info@Oct11boston.org 33 Harrison Ave, 5t

Worcester Vegan Challenge

by Mike Benedetti, Eileen Botti, Rachel Hamilton, Artur Janc, Cody Rank, Jaclyn Marie Kateri Snow Sargent, Allison Vasallo, and Drew Wilson We challenge every self-proclaimed vegetarian and vegan in the city to hand out one (1) booklet about factory farming to a college student this semester. Duckie Last semester, along with our friends, we handed out more than 1,000 booklets about the cruelties of modern animal agriculture to local students. It was time well-spent, both because of the many positive comments we received and because if only 1% of those students make a change in diet, thousands of animals will be spared needless suffering. Drew On one of our last days leafleting in 2007, a local vegan came to join us when we had only a single booklet left. We were surprised at what a positive experience it was to get a new person involved even in such a small way. Mike We'd like to see this positivity repeated hundreds of times in Spring 2008. If you'd like to leaflet with "Team Worcester," or just pick up a free Vegan Outreach booklet to hand out on your own, please contact us: info@vegworcester.com or 305-393-3250. IMGA0005 We wish you a happy and cruelty-free Spring!

KFC protesters cop plea: $63, probation

Clive McFarlane has the story in the T&G.
Well, a $100 fine each for defacing public property and up to a $500 fine and five months in jail for disturbing the peace could have happened had the students taken their case to trial and lost. So they put their youthful idealism aside and copped a plea — a three-month unsupervised, pretrial probation without any admission of wrongdoing. If they pay their $21 per month probation fee and stay out of trouble, the case will go away.

My Review

Coconut Curry Soup

With vegetarian mock-meat entrées like kung pao chicken, sesame beef, and heavenly chicken, even the most meat-loving among us will be able find something they like. Add some fried chicken drumsticks, spring rolls or wonton soup as an appetizer and you've got yourself a solid meal. This all-vegetarian restaurant is a nice place to grab a quick lunch or sit down with the family for a nice dinner.

Heavenly Chicken Rocks

Entrées are reasonably priced at around $7 or $8, but with appetizers and drinks your meal will likely come out closer to $10. If you're really pinching pennies, try their lunch specials. The portions are the same size, but only costs 5 bucks. Each lunch special comes with rice, a spring roll and a fried wonton. Hard to beat for 5 bucks! In addition to the deep-fried goodness of their mock-meat dishes, they also have a good selection of fancy-pants fruit smoothies. I was impressed by the strawberry and coconut milk smoothie. It made for a nice desert.

The people behind Buddha Hut are the same folks who created Quan Yin, one of Central Mass' top veg restaurants. Quan Yin is located at 56 Hamilton St in Worcester and has a similar menu, but slightly cheaper prices and a different atmosphere. Buddha Hut is larger and more geared towards formal dining than Quan Yin. Despite the similarities, the two restaurants don't see each other as competitors. I'm certainly of the opinion that there is room enough for both places here in the heart of Massachusetts. Give it a try! The grand opening is on March 31. You'll get 10% off your order and you'll even get some free pound cake to boot! The place will be open everyday until then, but they're still working out some kinks. When I went on Friday, they were processing credit cards by hand and they're still figuring out how to efficiently accommodate big parties (8+). Anyway, hope to see you at the grand opening!
