- Nick Kotsopoulos, Jan 30, 2007: Manager’s plan follows through on renewable-energy goals; City energy specialist would take the lead investigating green projects
Among some of the many proposals included in the Climate Action Plan are:
- Installing a 100-kilowatt hydropower turbine at the city’s water filtration plant in Holden. The turbine could produce a significant amount of the electricity consumed by the plant.
- Developing a plan for installing a 250-kilowatt wind turbine at the new North High.
- Enabling five-minute shut-off in municipal trucks. Medium- to heavy-duty trucks in the city’s fleet have the ability to be programmed to turn off after a period of idling. A diesel vehicle idling for one hour each day wastes 500 gallons of fuel, according to the report.
- Developing a school waste recycling program.
- Looking into the potential of generating electricity from methane at the former Greenwood Street municipal landfill.
- Investigating the feasibility of solar heating, hot water and electricity at public schools and other municipal buildings.
- Establishing a biodiesel pilot program for vehicles and power equipment at Hope Cemetery. Biodiesel is made from vegetable oil.
- Increasing the fuel efficiency of the city’s vehicle fleet by purchasing vehicles with higher miles-per-gallon ratings.
- Encouraging carpooling for municipal employees.
- Increasing the residential recycling rate from 27 percent to 50 percent.
